"does that mean my lobe is gone?"
Yep, bad day at Black Rock.

"do I have to replace the cam completely?"
    Yep, another bad day....

AND, if you want to do it right, disassemble the motor and clean all the oil galley passages within an inch of their life or the debris from the corked lobe will find its way between the lobe and lifter face on your new cam (as well as other places you don't want it to be).

I posted on this thread how I break in a new cam if you want to know. Also, on the new installation, make certain that you have sufficient valve to piston clearance, that the rocker arms are not binding up on the studs, that the springs are not going into coil bind and that the bottom of the retainers are not bottoming out on the valve guides or bosses. If you plan on running dual springs, disassemble them and break in the cam using only the outer springs.
