Lets go thru several questions here.

    Speed-o-motive offers a 383 stroker kit for a small journal 327,
so They may offer something simular for the 283. the journal sizes are the same size. You could call them and ask. You would need to do some block work to stroke the 283 and You would need to use a little better head than the 283 heads, although the 283 -4bbl. and the 327-250hp shared the same head in 1963.

The cheapest way to go here is to purchase a good used 350.get the complete motor. If it needs to be rebuilt you can buy a complete kit for a 350, including cast pistons for less than $200.
I have build several 355s with a performance cam for less than a grand. They run good and would be fun in your 63.

283s are no slouch either. You are missing a lot of cubes there but you can still get around 275 to 300 hp for the street.

I think 1963 may have been the first year that the 3 speed transmission had a syncronized low gear.It was a vast improvment. A 3 speed and a 4 speed both have 1 to 1 high gear

But, Buy the 4 speed anyway, It will make the car! You will enjoy your 63---- TEN TIMES MORE

400s were built from 1970 thru 1980. 70 and 71 were 4 bolt blocks with 3 freeze plugs on the side of the block.72 on were 2 bolt main blocks and most only had 2 freeze plugs per side. The 2 bolt is just as strong as the 4 bolt and many feel the 2 bolt may be stronger. I think this applies only in the 400.

Because all of us believe bigger is better, even some of us old dogs seem to have fogotten how good a 283 could be made to run. Way back when, I shocked quite a few of the Big Boys with a little 283 in my 56 Chevy.

Dave, Are You directing that at me??? If so ,thats O.K. Hope You have have a wonderful Sunday with your friends and family.

Oh, If you can guarantee the same results I got on my last real estate deal, Please, Please ,tell me more!

I made 3 purchases at one time.I have recently had an offer on one of them for 6.52 times what I paid for all 3. I think they will pay more. I guess I could have asked if he had a nice hot rod to use as a partial payment.

Unlike old cars, I dont know of any reproduction companies on land. The valve will only go up.

I am normally in Church at this time on Sunday. Could not go because of illness in the family. Think I needed it bad. Maybe I wouldn't be quite as ugly.

    Have a Blessed day! Gene

Gene, let me bring you up to speed. Scooter is the 283 king on here and I pick on him and he picks on me for downplaying the little 283 motor. He was trying to convince lamey to do the 283 and said if lamey would contact him via email, he'd detail the build. Lamey sent Scooter a PM and I asked pro60chevy to post the hooked fish because Scooter was settin' the hook in lamey. It's all in good fun, just trying to lend a little humor to the board.

Nope Horse, just directing that comment at life in general !!! Scooter be the czar of 283's, the king of the mini-mouse, the only one here who looks at a 10 grand tach and wants to know where the ones with the big numbers are!!!!! Scooter makes the mouse scoot!!! (And I never pass up a chance to mess with him!!!!!!!)

On the real estate deal, just send cash and I'll fill ya in on the details later. Trust me, it's a slam dunk, can't lose, money tree, cash generating double throw down killer deal!!!!!

Hey do this if you want to run a 283....

Use the 283 as the base and throw in a set of vortec heads? these flow really well on small motors....or? get a set of torquer 305 58cc castings....bothe are relatively inexpensive and when combined with a high winding small motor can produce upwards of 350 hp with a 270 series cam....

I have 10 or so 283's lying around and will take any than anyone want to sell for a reasonable price.....

With either head choice I have suggested and a "good" cam 350hp is easily obtainable in the 283, 307, 327 and you can easily knock down 22-26mpg....something that takes work to get that kind of mpg out of a 350....Think about it....

im in a better mood today and still dont get all the smarta@@ comments.. maybe i need therapy

Its quite obvios to anyone that can think, cubes are the easy power, that is not in question here. I just want to work with what i have (the 283), for this summer at least. For my "winter" project i will probably rebuild a strong 350/383 and 4 speed. I will then mothball the 283/3sp in case i sell the car or want it restored to exact original condition etc.... Hell who knows it may wind up with a 502.

This can sure get confusing and addicting.... fast.

any how, for those that have given good advice on the pros and cons of the specific question i originally posted, Thank You.
