283 Stroker??
Ok, new here, hope this post isnt too dumb, here goes-
I realize the cheapest way to make power is to increase cubes. Ive seen all sorts of stroker variations on the 350 that are very effective and effecient.
Im in the process of buying a 63 Impala SS, with a 283. Being such a heavy car, im thinking a torque increase would be real nice. Figure one easy way to do that is to stroke it *if possible*
What i currently have to work with is on the current engine is the following-
Edelbrock Performer intake
Edelbrock 600 carb.
K&N 14"
Hedman headers/2.25" exhaust system
MSD ignition system
At a minimum i am going to add the following work/parts-
bore .030 (or more if needed)
Comp Cams 270 (or maybe 280)
Forged pistons (want to have final net compression between 9.5:1-10:1+/-)
New valves (1.94)
Will do all proper tweaking/tuning on heads/intake etc...
My question - is it possible to install a 3.48 stroke (350) crank into a 283 block? If so, what are any potential issues that will arise?
Thanks in advance.Lamey Custom Knives

"My question - is it possible to install a 3.48 stroke (350) crank into a 283 block?"
Short answer, no. Main journal diameter on the 283 crank is 2.300", on the 350 it's 2.450. Counterweights are much larger on the 350 crank and there will not be enough meat in the webs to clearance the block. With any bore smaller than 4", custom pistons would be required (read...high-buck). Rod journals are larger on the 350 crank, but you could skirt this issue by using 350 rods.
Even if these hurdles were not in place, you'd have breathing issues using the small-port 283 heads with much larger displacement.
This question in one form or another comes up often on this forum and I'll give you my standard answer. Yank the 283, wrap it in plastic and store it in the corner of the garage. Locate a good-running used 350 (do a compression test on it before laying down your green) and start with a valid player. Want more power? Bolt in a Scat or modified Chevy 400 crank.
There are others on this forum, like Scooter , who will disagree with me, but that's the way I see it from a common-sense point of view.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

Thanks Tech. i figured it would be a "no go" or it would be common practice already.
I have been thinking about yanking the 283 and the 3 sp. and installing a strong 350, 383 or 400sb, along with a 4 speed Muncie.
Another question i have, unrelated to the original is final gear ratio on the 3 speed trans. the same as a 4 speed? (just trying to get a higher final ratio to run lower rpm at highway speeds etc.).
I dont want to go through the cost/trouble of putting a 4sp. in if the final drive ratio is the same as the 3sp.Lamey Custom Knives

If you're talking stick shift, yeah they're both 1.00 final drive in the earlier boxes. If you're talking auto, the late model 700R4 four speed had an overdrive 4th gear.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

Lamey, for the 400, start checkin' full-size Impalas, station wagons and pickups beginning in 1972. There should be a ton of 'em around Biloxi that those good ol' boys have parked in the weeds.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

All im wanting is a good strong daily driver, time and money are an issue so for now im gonna stick with the 283. If it doesnt work out (lack of power) i will find a 350/383/400 to build.
Just need to get it on the road for this summer.
Fellas, why does this post draw so much sarcasm? I just dont get it. I know when some one asks me about Bladesmithing, Gunsmithing or anything else im knowledgable in,, the last thing I do is give the person posing the question comic relief.Last edited by LameyKnives; 04-30-2005 at 11:46 PM.

someone on my side finally!
Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
