    chevrolet 307 V-8

hey everyone, im new to this forum but i have some questions about a chevrolet 307 v8. I have been lookin at this lady's '71 nova, but its not an ss so it has the 307.Now my question is regarding stroking it. i know that you can stroke a 305 to a 355 but i wanted to know if you could do one on a 307 and get a pretty good amount of torque. I really want a 350 stroked to a 383 for number like 400+ torque and hp but i was wondering if anyone out there had done anything not to expensive to make that 307 run liek hell or if its not worth it to at all. If i were to buy that nova i really want to keep it numbers matching but i want it to be a torque and hp monster. So would that make it a 357 if you stroked it? If anyone out there has any answers out there plaese let me know

    Thanks,

    Cooper

the 307 is a 283 block with a 327 crank (3.875" X 3.250") You'll more than likely run into the same problem as I outlined for lamey on this thread as far as counterweight/web interference with a 350 or 400 crank in a 283 block.

Others on this forum may have better info for you. Want to keep it numbers matching, wrap the 307 in plastic and stow it for later when you sell the car.

Tech, dont forget that the 307 is a "big main" 283 block.....that suggests that you could put a Z/28 crank in it and make a 283 that was a late model one.

There needs to be a 262/265/283/305/307 page since these questions seem to pop up every 12th post.....with small variations.

Tech, your tip is ABSOLUTELY right.....put the old engine in a plastic bag and save it. Darn few folks can tell a 350/383/400 from an original smaller engine, especially when it is installed n a car. I remember too much the pains of rope seals, etc. Modern stuff is much better.

This may surprise some, but you can make a stock bore 350 out of a 307. It's no different than boring a 283 to a 301. Bore it to 4 inch and use a 350 crank.

If it ever needs boring again you are S-O-L

I guess You could , I would not want to spend a whole lot of money with that application. If you wanted to use the original block and you would be happy with 300 or so H.P , then You might consider it .If you want a lot more, then why spend the money on a block that if anything happens you junk the block and start all over?
Normally when guys do this to a 307 its because the were able to find a good set of standard bore pistons cheap, bore the block .125, throw something like a performer cam in it and go have fun.You still need heads, headers, intake and carb. for this package.

i have always been a believer of use what you got. i havent seen much info on a 307 bulild but i know from experience when i was in high school. a buddie of mine built up a 307 headers cam intake bumped up the compression and was running it in a chev shortbox truck with a 3 spd standard of all things.
this thing was the deal and was amazingly strong. i would guess with a updated set of heads a 307 would perform pretty darn good in a nova.
    somethig to think about!!!
