    motor mount question

would a new set of mounts for a 350 in a '35 ford (currently 283) be a direct swap from the current mounts or no? would we have to drill or weld the new ones on? sorry...kinda dumb question i know...i'm just trying to get through the most critical steps in the swap to be able to keep the engine running and we dont have a welder so im trying to guage how far we can get with this right away...thanks!

Slow Ride hit the question dead on. Early 283 (and 265) SBC had front mounts. Literally on the front of the engine, just outside the timing cover. Just take a look. If the mounts are there, you'll probably have to switch around. The General made side mount 283s, but I don't think there were front mount 327s.

    Good luck.

    motor mounts

you might consider a saddle type mount. Speedway Motors makes frame mounts that are specific to 35-40' fords Part# 135-3312, then you will need a sbc saddle part# 135-6023 and a cushion kit #720-9314

You will still be required to pre-fit the engine to know where to place the mounts. Make sure that your motor has about a 4-6deg angle (nose up) when fitting it in the frame.... Makes the oil drain back toward the pump.

If you don't want to use the saddle mounts you can use something like #916-18002 and move the frame mounts back a bit farther. Moroso also makes mounts similar to these except out of steel and they are less beefy and cheaper. about $20 available through jegs.

if you are asking if the 283 mounts and the 350 are the same then the answer is yes.

    another thing

.....if you plan to keep messing with old cars...... get a welder before anything else. You have no idea how many obstacles it removes and how much quicker/cheaper your work will be.

First thing first. Buy the welder and learn how to use it. Your whole outlook on the project will change, guarranteed.

johnny, I think you'll find that 4-6 degrees down bubble will be excessive because you'll have to mount the pinion up-bubble at roughly the same angle as the motor is down-bubble. When I do an engine swap, I position the carb pad of the intake manifold level after leveling the car/truck. This usually works out to about 2 1/2 to 3 degrees down-bubble on the motor, so I position the pinion at the same angle up-bubble so that I don't have u-joint issues.
