    350 chevy rebuild advice

i am about to aquire a 350 from my dad. its a 260 base hp motor he bought from a dealership. has had some problems with it and i want to build it into a street/strip motor. i was wondering if putting camel hump heads would be beneficial. in addition i want to put a 383 stroker kit, and run a victor jr intake with an edelbrock 650 carb. i want to bore it over, just not sure how much yet. probably just .020. am i heading in the right direction for a drag car that can be driven to work daily.

Don't waste your money rebuilding these heads. By the time you install hard seats for unleaded gas and all the other work required to freshen them up, you'll have more invested than it would cost you for the best damned iron heads Chevy ever produced, the 12558060 RPO L31 Vortec heads. I have a Scoggin-Dickey parts catalog in front of me that shows $249.75 each complete less rockers. You'll have to either run the Vortec rail rockers or if you want to run regular rockers, you'll have to drill and tap for studs and guide plates......easier to use rail rockers. Use the Chevy Vortec dual-plane intake 12366573, intake gaskets 12529094 and intake bolts 12550027.

Build the motor 9.0:1 to 9.5:1, use dished pistons to get there, zero deck the block, use a 0.039" compressed gasket and a cam to match the compression ratio and characteristics you want (call your favorite cam grinder for a recommendation).

If you don't know how to figure compression ratio, read this:
