    http://www.55-57chevys.com/coccc/art...9/68asty1.html

shows some detail on a 68 big chev.

    Let's see.... I had a 68 with a 307, a 68 with a 327, a 68 with a 396, a 68 chevelle with a 307 and a 68 camaro with a 210 hp 327. All were lacking in go except the 396.

Depending on the year and model there are two compression ratios available but I just looked up the 1978 8.5 copression model and it is a 165 hp with a 2 barrel and the smog crap. I am pulling a 305 out of a car right now and am gonna see what I can make it pull hoping for 325 HP with under 600.00 I will post the results. Hope this helps. The 305 has great low end torque.

I had a quick 305 question: I'm new to this kind of engine and I have had a problem lately that my idle has been to high when the car is in drive and I'm sitting at a stop light or something like that. Today when I shut off the car it even chugged a little like there was still gas in the carb. It just recently started and I wasn't sure if the only way to adjust it was with the distributor or if there was an idle screw of some sort. Or maybe some other problem?? Any help would be kick ass.

Timing is off. Put a timing light on it or if you don't have one loosen the distrubutor hold down clamp and turn on way until your idleing comes down and retighten the hold down and take it for a spin.

Thanks, I'll give it a try but is there a reason why that would just all of a sudden happen like that? I kinda noticed the problem after I used some carb-cleaner, would that have anything to do with it also?

I'm going with my experience on my SB. Sometines when I step on it to hard, for some reason the hold down comes loose and the distributor turns and then I will have the same problem your having, engine racing and hard to shut off. There could be alot of different problems than what I mentioned but try that first.

About the hold down cap......I undid the 4 spring screws holding it down, but the cap doesn't move because it's in a like groove. Am I doing this right?

It sounds like you loosened the distributor cap and not the hold down

Look under the distributor and their should be one maybe two bolts
