87-95 Chevy Heads
I need to get an intake that will fit my 87-95 heads. Will an older intake fit or do these heads take special intakes like the vortecs? I know the vortecs have taller ports and that the bolt holes don't line up. What are the complications of my heads?
Thanx1973 Chevy Nova

I understand that you can elongate the two center intake bolt holes so they line up with the holes in the heads.
I've never done it and I would be a little anxious about carving up a $200+ intake. Have you asked your machinist? He might do a more professional job at a reasonable cost.I intend to live forever; so far, so good.

So the only thing keeping someone from bolting on an older intake is that the 4 center bolts don't line up? And this holes can be made bigger so that they do line up?1973 Chevy Nova

They will fit, some of the newer intakes have the smog stuff, but a bbc intake will fit all from a 68 396 to a 95 454. Then the Vortec comes into play and they will not fit.

The SBC Vortec intakes are a whole different ballgame as Chevy eliminated both center holes on each side. There are only two front and two rear on each side. I used an Edelbrock intake on mine and they were very specific about the gaskets to be used. Also, the torque spec is only 11 lbs. The only problem I had was a rather large gap in the front and rear of the intake.I intend to live forever; so far, so good.

Your probably ok to elongate the holes but why not just get an 87 up intake-GMPP, Edelbrock, Holley, Weiand all make them and you can find them cheap on ebay.

I recently installed Vortec heads on an older style block & thought about modifying my old Performer RPM intake. Although this modification is possible it is not recommended. I bought a new intake designed for the Vortec heads.
When you add up the cost of machining the old intake versus what you could sell the old intake for & buy a new intake the difference wasn't worth the risk to me. Just my 2 cents worth.

Check out your local automobile recycling center (auto wrecker) for an intake off a 1987 Cutlass RWD or equivalent. They are SUPPOSED to be New style heads with Quadrajet 4 barrel intake. Check valve covers first. OR call Mr. Goodwrench about O.E. Intake.
