    Adjusting Valves on 283 sbc

What is the proper way to adjust the valves on my 283. It's the original motor in a 1964 Impala. I also have a tapping noise and am blowing a LOT of smoke (white) and black soot is painting the ground. I plan on doing a compression test or possibly a leak down test if I can find one.

    Thanks

It sounds like a bad head gasket is causing your white smoke. Adjusting your valves isn't going to help. I would recommend you remove the heads and inspect the engine before going any further.
I intend to live forever; so far, so good.
