First thing that would come to mind would be a free flowing exhaust system and a less restrictive air cleaner. If you want just some nice, very driveable horsepower gains, save your money til you can get the entire Edelbrock power package, including cam, lifters, springs, intake, and carb.
I'm not much on automatic transmissions, I'm sure someone will be along with suggestions on that problem
Other than that, welcome to CHR and have fun with your project.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

I assume your 71 Nova has the stock 350 TH trans. Sounds like she's ready to retire.. the good news is a stout 350 can be purchased for a very reasonable cost through any of the major after market suppliers, or a reputable local builder should be able to accomodate your needs. Good luck.

I agree with DynoDon is sound like your tranny is getting tired. I have and 87 Suburban with a turbo 350that was doing the same thing. Shortly after I lost second and third gear .If Its too loud your too old!!!
Thank you Roger. .
