305 help advice
hello all this is my first post. I tried searching the forums but came up empty handed. i dont understand why in a forum dedicated to hot rods you cant search a 3 digit numerical value. i searched 305 and also tried 305cid with no luck. so anyways... i recently purchased a 63 chevy c-10 with a 305cid and th350 out of a 79 caprice. i am looking for cheap and easy bolt on projects that i could do in a day or weekend to release a little more power this old dog has. as far as i know the engine is stock except for a rv cam and a Quadrajet carb. i am considering rebuilding a 327 out of a 65 impala to replace the 305 or the possibility of a new crate small block so anything i purchase I would like to have to opportunity to transfer it to another small block if i decide to swap the motor.
so basically my question is, you guys have any ideas for preformance upgrades i could do for a couple hundred dollars to my 305 that could be done in a day or two that could also be swapped to another small block if the time comes.
thanks in advance. small block performance is new to me. i can wrench on these old americans just dont know how to make em go fast.
heres a pic of the truck if anyones interested

troy, if you had read the search instructions, you would have learned that you can use an asterisk as a wild card, like this *305. Here's the result of that inquiry...

And here's the result of entering it as 305*...

u will find that if u rebuild a stock 327 u wont find much of a performance difference vs a 305. Here is my oppinion for a cost affective small block that will pull 7000 rpm no problem.
1.get a 350 block (make sure it a 4 bolt main, dont wanna piss around with a lower quality block.
2. Edelbrock Intake (2800-7200 rpm)
3. Holley 750cfm 4bbl double pumpe
4. Flat top hyperuetectic pistons.
5. Comp cams Magnum Camshaft, Very rough idle model
6. Hooker comp headers.
7. vortec or fuel injected heads (get ported and polished)
8. get a steel crank shaft
9. make sure u send in pistons and everything when block gets machined.
10. after maching send all moving parts into get balanced.
11. Vortec Connecting rods, cheap, tough, and light
12. get some decent comp lifters.
13. u dont want any cheap bearings or gaskets
14. get a TH350 or th400 transmission and install a B&M shift improver kit.
15. get a 3200-3800rpm stall tourque converter
16. get a double roller timming chain
17. get some nitrous, NOS powershot kit
18. get some low gear in that differential, 488's (wont be a fast highway cruiser but damn it would be hard to keep ur head off the back window off the lights)
19. when machining in process get it bored to 355.
20. get some cold running spark plugs (i recommend ZEX 3 prong platniums)
21. a fuel regulator wouldnt be a bad idea (want like 7psi on nos)
22. Ignition Retard is also recommended
an engine like this should pull 7000 rpm and be a beast on regular 91 octane pump gas (premium needed with nitreous), and the best part about this, it wont cost a huge pile of money to build.
i dont think i missed much, just got off work. Hope this helped u out.

For smaller upgrades to your 305" I would recommend
1. Cylinder heads with flat top pistons to increase your CR a bit.
2. Headers should increase performance a bit. This is cheap and easy and makes your engine sound cooler to
3. If it has a 2port carb replacing that with a 4port would also give you more power, find a cheap used one. This will require a new intake. This could also be done in a couple of days.

an Intake manifold, carb, headers, distributor, fuel pump, valve covers, air cleaner, would all transfer over to your 327 when you build it up. Why not just start buying parts for the 327 and just leave the 305 as is for a driver then just swap in the 327 and all the good parts when it is ready???Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
