    Thumbs up timing

when i shut the engine off 327 it
almost sounds like it wants to deisel
a little, right now it just gives a slight nock
just before it shuts off it is 4 deg advanced
and running off ported vaccum idle is 850 rpm
pistons 9:1 flat tops. i am thinking i should
retard timing and set to 2 deg advance.
    what do you think?

12 degrees is the best place to start for timing on any engine. You may have carbon deposits or sharp edges in your combustion chamber that are getting hot and igniting the fuel before the sparkplug can and after the ignition is turned off.
