    need info on 041 heads

Hi, does anyone have information on 041 heads? The full casting # is 3947041. Think they're 76cc, but are they good? What size intake runners? Better for torque or better for HP? Any info would be great, thanks,
    Mad

As usual, information on these and other heads is all different from one source to another. Some say they are 64 cc chambers, others say they are 76 cc chambers, some say they have 1.94/1.50 valves, others say they have 2.02/1.60 valves, some don't list the intake runner volume, others say it is 165 cc's.

I suggest that you procure a burrette and measure the chambers and runners yourself. If you're unfamiliar with the procedure, here is a paper I wrote....

If you find that they're 64 cc chambers, I suspect that would explain the motor spitting out the head gaskets....to high static compression ratio / deck and head not parallel / detonation from insufficient fuel quality / early intake closing point on camshaft resulting in excessive cylinder pressure for available fuel....

Hi Tech, I just measured them and they do have 76cc chambers, valves are 1,92"/1,50". I'll do the runners tomorrow. These heads seem to be quite scarce, mortec says they're good for making HP, but what I really want is torque in my 5000 lbs van. But first it's off to the magnafluxing for them...
Didn't know they were so rare, otherwise I would have measured them right away myself. Thanks for the article!

Make certain that the block decks and the heads are nice and flat or you're gonna be doin' this again.....

Any volume shy of about 170 cc's should be great for low-rpm torque in your 360 (0.060" over 350).

Thanks, Tech, you just made me run out to the garage and get out the good old burrette (or whatever the spelling of that thing may be) again
    They're 160cc runners.
I got some 1 5/8" headers for the baby once it's reassembled. Would they help torque or should I go larger/smaller? What size exhaust piping would you say?
    Thanks again!

I'll check the flatness of block and heads tomorrow, here in Germany it's already quite late in the day and I've already spent hours taking everything apart...

1 5/8" primaries should work fine, going into no larger than 2 1/4" pipes with a "H" or "X" crossover between the pipes, right after the collectors.

Hi Tech, no need to take them to the magnaflux, the right hand one is cracked. #4 cylinder, the one that had water in it, so there's one mystery solved. Thanks for your help in any case! I'll start some more threads soon, trying to get as much info I can before I start reassembling...
