    Quick Question

I found a 400 small block near by that was pulled from a 1976 impala. It is all stock with a GM aluminum Q-jet intake. It doesn't come with a carb or distributor and has a rear main seal leak. They are asking $400 dollars for it. I was wondering if this is a good deal or what you thought about this engine. Thanks

I don't think the intake is stock just everything else.

I am not a big 400 fan but if you have one that you can hear run that is worth something.Just make sure that you either have 3-freeze plugs on the side of the block or a raised area between the other two freeze that one could go or feel around on the back side of the balancer for the extra weight for the external balance.I also forgot about the extra weight on the flex plate.

What type of build where you going to do on the 400 if you bought it?

What is it that you have against 400? What weaknesses do they have, and can they be corrected?

I did not mean to offend you.The 400 uses the siamesed cylinders, there is not a lot of material between the cylinders, they also use a short rod 5.565 rod.I have built quite a few of these over the years. The advice is use very good head gaskets, and a 5.7 or longer rod.Don't get really greedy with n20.I have used 175 shot before on the crank actually about 15-20 bottles and the stock crank actually hung in there.I would also upgrade to a larger cooling system.

If I get it it will be going into my 1967 camaro. I am looking for around 400 HP and fairly streetable. Sooner or later it will be backed by a th200-4r tranny which i hope will help with streetability. Thanks for the help

If your 400 makes 400 h.p.you will rip that 200 tranny out very quickly.I would try either a built 700 r4 or 350,400 turbo.

What you're describing isn't worth $400. Offer 'em $125 and let 'em bump you to $175 if you have to after you've pulled a head and verified stock bore (4.125"). If it has been cut 0.020", buy it. If it has been cut 0.030" or more, pass on it in my opinion.

    You are 100 % right.I would never go over a .040 over bore on a 400.
