I'm not trying to add fuel to the fire, but I just did a little bit of research and this is what I found.
I took all my information from this page: http://www.mmsonline.com/articles/030107.html I found a few others that were similar, yet far more complex than I cared to investigate or try to comprehend.
Using that formula I used an inch for the length (I don't know how thermal expansion works on a circular object with a circular hole. So, after some discussion with a co-worker we settled on using the diameter of the hole. I also have no idea what the actual diameter is.) and 5.7 for the coefficient and 162 for the temperature (230-68) and I come up with a length change of 0.00092 of an inch.
I would also submit that a balancer has much more mass than a ring gear and it would take much longer for it to cool down. It might work if that is sufficient expansion.
I'm not too sure about my calculations, much less the actual physics of the thermal expansion on a balancer. I draw buildings for a living, and I'm sure no physicist.
I think I'd just use a bigger hammer if it were me.
Just in case......Happy Birthday Richard. .
