Ive been listening in on this thread because ive been having this tapping noise coming from my 350 small block. you can hear the noise at an idle and when the rpms go up you can barely hear it. the noise happens on and off to? somedays it ticks some it doesnt but lately its pretty much been tapping/knocking all the time. So i tried the stick thing and pretty much narrowed it down to the mechanical fuel pump. Just wondering if there is any type of precations i should take or whats the easiest way to change it.

If you have a mechanical fuel pump, it may be a bent fuel pump rod. It will sound like a bad lifter or worse, like a loose rod. Could be a lifter that won't pump-up but you said you set the valves so that should have been detected. If you have to pull the pan off, check the edges of the rods and cylinder walls that they have clearanced enough for the 383. Change your oil, screen it for debris, eg. types of metals. Cut open your filter and check it too...

You're welcome Mike, glad it worked out for you. Roger, it's taken a few years but my inventory of excess parts has shrunk a fair bit from 1 1/2 garage stalls to about an eight by eight space. ...
