small block intake
bossman has dropped his street rod in my lap for repair of leaking intake gaskets.....My question is .....do I use the rubber end gaskets or pitch them and use silicone.......when I tore it down they had used black silicone........my gasket set includes both rubber gaskets and tube of silicone......which is better??

In my experience I have always used both. put the rubber gaskets in and use the high temp. silicone on the ends. Jim

I dump the rubber and lay on a thick bead of silicone.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

Never had much luck with the rubber. Go with the Silicone.Keep smiling, it only hurts when you think it does!

i ussually go with the black or the red silicone for the intake ends.... the corks and rubbers always leakjust because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day

Well, as usual I'm gonna be the dissenting vote. I use the end gaskets with Hi-Tack on the block side to hold them in place. I let the hi tack dry thorougly, then put a small gob of Copper RTV in each corner and CAREFULLY set the manifold in place.
IMO one of Ford's "better ideas" on Windsors and 385's is that the intake bolts are vertical. Setting the intake on straight without moving the gaskets is real easy with a stud in each corner!!!
......I don't have leaks on chebbies either with this method......I don't like the idea of big gobs of silicone on the inside of the motor, and perhaps eventually block an oil return and/or clogging the screen on the oil pickup tube......Last edited by Dave Severson; 03-06-2006 at 12:19 AM.

Dude so tell me your technique. I would love to hear it because I don't know any other simple way of doing it other than just putting just sealer on it like some people say.. but I just don't trust that to any extent.
