Hey dozzer: yes those are some unconventional things to put in a motor! I had nothing to lose since we were going to tear it down anyway. I'm admitting this stuff too to hopefully let other people know they don't work, or didn't work for us, and wouldn't recommend it even before this happened to us. Even though my excuse is storage, I still don't know what prompted me to use the grease. I guess I still thought it would melt away and be ok, apparently not.
76gmc1500: I've always used oil in the past. On our other 57 we had non-crome moly rings, the car smoked for about 5 minutes lightly, stopped, and was ready to go per say. It had a tad bit of smoke but it was all gone by say 50-100 miles if that. On the first rebuild, after 550 miles the rings "should" of been seated by then one would think.

The old Bon-Ami story again. I've seen several old Army vets wreck a lot of engines with that stuff, not that they were any great loss anyway. Why not just drive on dirt roads with no air cleaner?

You got it Pope. The majority of these cheap backyard fixes usually just trash the motor. Good machine work, correct parts selection, and proper assembly procedures is still the only way to go IMO.Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!
