    Question cam

i have a 350. i have a cam with a .427 lift the engine has 305 heads so the compression is higher. it hooked up with a 700r4 tranny with i believe 4.10 rear end gears. i dont feel like i'm getting the launch i want or mid range power. it is in a 1964 chevy impala

do those heads have 1.84 intake valves or 1.72........the "416" castings have the 1.84 intakes and 58cc combustion chambers.......they would work fine with that small lift on a 350. I think you are running a way too tall gear for that motor combo......i would put a numerically lower gear ratio in there.....those heads won't be the problem, although, if you want and have the money to do so having them machined for 1.94 intakes will turn them into mini camel humps, but you will then need to upgrade to a more stout camshaft.

also, thats a very heavy car you are trying to move, so if you are looking to have a hard launch and good midrange..you will need to do some considerable amount of engine work to accomplish this.......I Love small blocks but if you have to move a mountain then stab a big block in there, the more torque the better to move it.....JMO

How much money do you want to spend? The 4.10 gears coupled with that 3.06 first gear should launch your car like a rocket. Are you certain they are 4.10's? To get more mid-range torque you should really upgrade your cam and heads. Vortecs are the most bang for the buck but you will have to get a compatible intake manifold. As long as you stay with a cam with no more than .470 lift, you should be okay. What are you running for a carburetor? What kind of vehicle? What size rear tires? Can you provide more information?

GOOD CAM BUT HE WOULD HAVE TO RUN A 3,000 STALL OR MAYBE EVEN MORE IN A 305.

Sounds just like the performer rpm cam in my 383 performer rpm package engine. Pulls from about 1200 to 5800+

that cam you recommended, with 240+ duration at .050 is way to much for his low compression, it might sound good at idle but it will serve itself useless under load. best to match cam with the heads and compression and 416 castings reform their best with a .470" lift with out mods......what you are trying to accomplish with your car, try an isky 270 mega cam......it has a 108 LSA, that will give you a nice sound and work well with your compression.

someone correct me if im wrong but those 305 heads on the 350 ... yeah they'll fit and make good low end power and raise compression.. but mid range and top end would be next none... i agree that you should just get some decent heads (vortecs are good) but the only thing i dont like about them is i hear time and time again of them cracking... still i think it is a good head just make sure you keep it cool.. with that car i would be looking for a cam that makes some good torque though! ... also everything needs to work together... if you find a cam that its RPM range is idle-5500 compliment that with a good intake manifold that is idle or 800 rpm to 6500 or 5500 ya know? hope this helps

That's OK Dave, if he's like the rest of us gearheads chances are it still isn't finished.
