roller rockers
Simple question here. I just picked up a very stock 72 chevelle for my daughter to drive around in. I have some spare parts left from my nova. My question is can I use roller rockers with pressed in studs or do they need to be screw in? I have a set of 1.5 ratio pro magnum with a eps performer intake that id like to throw on. Do I need to change the pushrods? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You had better check to make sure. I don't think you can run roller rockers without guide plates though. I surely wouldn't suggest it. I have heard recently somewhere that some people are running self-aligning rockers with success on old engines. Haven't tried it or researched though.RAY

i ran roller rocker with press studs and no guide plates and my s10 driver never had any problems if the studs 3/8 or 7/16 stock are 3/8. they are the same as the rockers you have.you may want to check you pushrod length. check to make shure the engine is a older small block the newer small block some that used self aligning rockers they have a grooved on the bottom of the rocker that rides on the valve stem if so then i would say no .or you need guilde plates to use them

Crane says for the st.......1988 and later engines equipped with self-aligning rocker arms require the installation of pushrod guideplates and appropriate heat-treated pushrods in order for these rocker arms to function properly. Valve cover clearance must also be checked. dont have to have them on older motors.
comp. cam says.....1988 and older chevy. dont have to have guide plates. probably wouldn't hurt anything though.Mike

the harland 1.6 sharps did fit in the stock center bolts covers for my 4.3 but you wound need to check is to if you have this type of covers and the older covers may hit but you some times can use a thicker gasket

Comp Cams and others make self aligning roller rockers that do not need guide plates. The cylindrical roller tip on these have flanges (like a railroad wheel) on each end of the cylinder to keep them centered over the valve stem. They have them to fit both 3/8 and 7/16 studs, be they screwed in or pressed.
I don't think you really need to go to screw in studs unless building for high revs - which generally also means high lifts and spring pressures.

Its the stock 72 motor a 350 sb , I thought you only needed self aligning rocker arms on the vortec heads.
