    building a 5.0L

I have been thinking of building a stock 5.0L sbc for a hot rod build. and was thinking of how could I duild one to get 30+ gas milage out of it.

could a aftermarket EFI improve the performance, and milage in a stock 305?

EFI would help as would a overdrive trans and a super high gear ratio. A flat top piston instead of the normally dished piston would help also to promote better combustion of the fuel = more efficiency. Wide lobe separation angle and short duration cam would help also. 30+ is a tall order, wish you the best.

yea , I was thinking of the edelbrock EFI system. aand run a 700r4 trans. with a set of 2.73 gears. like what some of the 82-92 fbody cars run. but put that in a kit car .

30 mpg shouldn't be too hard, my El Camino gets 25 or so with a 305.

do you guys have LPG out in the states?

most V8 owners here have converted to it to save money on gas. over here i england petrol is well over 90p a ltr (not sure what that would be in $/gallon), but its bludy expensive

here it cost around a $1000 or less, but the fuel cost is HALF! not because of better gas millage, but the LPG is half price. also it burns much cleaner than petrol (better emissions and maybe a horse or two more)

and out of curiousity, roughly what mpg will i get out of a mildly tunned torquey (small-medium cam) 383 with 3.73 rear end? please tell me ill get over 10mpg or i'll cry!

lobster has brought something to my attention I had not thought of . about alternate fuels.

what would I need to do to a 305 to make it burn the E85 fuel?

a gas station near my house just started selling that stuff and its like half the price of regular unleaded.

would the E85 damage an edelbrock pro flo EFI system?

I was told if the o2 sencer , and other sencers would send false signals to the ECM is that true?

over here no one has problems with the stuff. they just buy the kit and get it fitted. in fact most people i talk to find their engines run better with the sfuff cos its burns better (and cleaner)

if it did send false signals to the ECU, you could always get it re-mapped at a performance tune shop

Here is another idea.Buy a carb. bolt it on and forget about it.Just think about how many dollars you will save because you did not buy the EFI.

by going to an efi I could save both in time and money, in the long run. an efi system can tune its self to the way I drive and my wife's without a loss of power or fuel mileage. where as a carb you have to do it manually. plus with efi no more cold early morning starts, I can use a remote starter kit with it.

Im going to contact edelbrock and ask about the E85 fuel in there efi system's.

the E85 would pay for the EFI in a few years or less in the dollars I will save in gas alone.

as of 2005 I averaged about $3200. for the year. I could save around $1000. this year if I were to go to the E85 fuel. maybe more, because with the higher gas prices I drove my truck less than I did in previous years.
