283 Head Suggestion
Aight, i've posted on a couple boards about the 283 with 305 heads.. and im basically getting the same type of response.. that the 305 heads are good to up the compression but they don't really breathe...
So, with that in mind i figure i'd find a head and just run dome pistions to up my compression..
so this is what i have so far
283 .040 over
600 cfm holley w/vac secondaries
65 k coil
350 turbo tranny
and stock gears (soon to be 3.73's when i find a cheaper LSD)
I am goin to run hyd cam. and i'll be driving this car on the hwy sometimes...i figure 3.73's are ok since 283's can take rev's not sure if i can go with a higher gear and be streetable
so where am i at.. i want to choose my cam later if my heads are goin to be change..now that this has arrised from other posts...

Depending on tire size, you might could run 3.90s out back. 283s like RPMs. Does the 283 have sentimental value. Why not at least start with some cubes like a 350. They are cheap, easy to build, and have a lot more torqueRAY

Solid lifters run a gap so you set the "lash" (which is the space between the rocker arm and the top of the valve) with a feeler gauge. You have to reset them occasionally depending on how many miles you put on it as they will not stay permanently set like a hydraulic lifter. Only the cam specs will limit your rpms. Most hydraulic lifters will not run over 6500 without experiencing valve float. Solid lifters will easily run over 7500 rpm if you have the cam and valve springs for it. Solid lifters are also noisy (a distinctive clatter) compared to hydraulic lifters which make no noise.

Young- I think that you may have to consider running a roller to get you up in the 8k+ range. Again you can call the cam grinders for their recomendations on what you want to do & they will tell you the best cam combo they have for your application.
Good Luck....Jim

1.94 1.6 "wokred" on a little bit will be just fine. put some good springs on the heads and a good cam depending on what u want?! easiest thing to do to a 283 is over-cam one. and u should be fine. i shift at 7500+ and it doesnt hurt mine
