265 cid options
First of all this is my first post ever on this forum. Looks like there is a ton of info on everything. A few months ago I picked up a 1956 chevy post that has the orginal 265 and the two speed power glide. I like the notion of "matching" numbers but not the low hp of the stock engine. I have a 327 that out of the very first car I ever drove "69 stawag" it was a tire roaster and it was stock. What are some things I can do to 265 that would beef it up. I've thought about putting the 265 crank in the 327. My dad doesn't want me to tear up the 265. He's old school and that's OK. Is there anybody out there with a hot 265.

Father knows best. Leave that little 265 alone. If you must do something, get a 327 or 350 and screw with that. Leave the 265 parked in the back of your garage and sell it with the car when it goes.---Tom

listen to swifster... car is worth a lot more with the original engine than with a $10,000 race motor.... so keep the 265, wrap it up so its weather proofed and keep it safe... and get yourself a toy to put in the car til that day you decide to sell it..... might even be nice if you end up with time to rebuild that 265 while it sits, use a heavey assembling grease when you put it together, no oil at all in it.... and it can sit forever as long as your bag it and seal it welljust because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day

That 327 would be a good swap,as a 265 really isn't worth fooling with,You'd have to invest too much in it just to bring it up to the stock power of the 327. You might also want to consider that when you add in one place, you need to upgrade in others, like handling and braking, exhaust etc. Hank

Consider what halftank says, that's where you really have to watch out:
Whether you pimp your 265 or throw in a 350, it's going to have a lot more power, one way or the other. If you old powerglide isn't up to par, it'll brake in the first 500 mls. That is, if you don't hit a tree because the brakes can't handle your "new" speed anymore. And your shocks and springs might sag on one side if you put in an engine with a lot of torque. You need to see FIRST exactly what your aiming at, THEN see what things other than engine-stuff you need to make the car fun. Once you start buying and building, don't leave your chosen path too far.
And I agree with the rest on keeping the 265 in a couple of garbage bags in a dry place with loads of WD40 covering everything (spray it in the intake, the exhaust-ports and literally everywhere you can get to, if it sits for 5 years now you'll want to rebuild it anyway).
Then get a 350 and start playing
Maybe pull the powerglide and throw in a 350 or 400...
That's just me thinking loud...

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
