glowing catylatic converter
hey guys i put new 350 crate engine in,new distributor complete,new wires ,plugs and carb .set dist. in 8degrees tdc ,cap#1 and rotor line up at 5 o,clock engine starts up ,idle shakey, but rev,s up no back fire or hesitation, runs for 3 minutues and catylatic converter glows red engine hot hot
,ran at 20inches vaccum before had to change q-jet it was leaking gas they sent new carb different gasket, first gasket open bore this one has four holes for primary and secondary my manifold is not open bore does this make a difference.am i running to lean to make cat. converter glow?

A flooding motor will cause the conv. to turn red also. raw gas will stand in the conv. and burn. you should be able to tell that though, because it would be running rich with black smoke coming out of the tail pipe, where if it was lean it wouldn't have the smoke. ford was bad about that. lean will do it also.Mike

I agree with the flooding theory, you have a real safety problem there. Whatever you do, don't park that vehicle in the grass. That CC will have to be changed.

Now you know why farmers chop those things off, they start more fires than lightning!
A new engine will do that for an hour or so till it cleans up. Your assembly lube has gotten into the cat con, and overloaded it. It may or may not still work right after it burns the oil out.
Note for future reference...don't hook the exhaust up to the converter for initial fire-up.

glowing converter
hey guys fixed glowing converter, put new crate engine in 350 -290 hp , ordered new carb q-jet and fuel pump , fuel pump is high volume which puts out 7psi , after reading carb. instrutions finally jeg,s specifies their q-jets will only run 2-5 psi , i got 7psi, booklet says and i quote these carb assemblies use long fulcrum floats and cannot run over 5psi or they will FLOOD EXCESSIVLEY I had piles of raw fuel in converter hence the glow,changed to 5psi pump no more glow. thanks for the help. soup

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
