I noticed you said Was done. That was then this is now.A hot tank, mag the block,Bore and hone, line bore if needed, recon the rods, install new rod bolts, pin fit the pistons, now we move to the heads, hot tank and mag, install a couple of valve seats, install new guides, new springs, locks, retainers and intake valves, and exhaust valves and add a performance valve job. This is a normal R&R in my book.Do you really think you can get this done for less than $ 1,000 ??

thats your way. my to me 375 motor doesnt need to be magnafluxed as you arent going to have to bore it over very much. and use regular heads with cheapo valves to get 375 hp. 375 hp is not a PERFORMANCE balls to the walls build!!!! it hink youve been doing stuff the expensive way for way to long and forget that cheap motor builds do in fact STILL EXIST.

You are correct.I won't build junk.Any engine should be magged no matter what. This is just the smart thing to do.No I don't and I won't build 'CLAIMER' type engines. The head work I described is part of any re-build not just a performance build.

Everything you say may or may not be necessary which would obviously affect the cost and whether you have the shop assemble or you do it yourself. I rebuilt the 318 in my Duster a couple of years ago and it set me back about $1200, but part of that was a new intake and carb and that was also counting the timing chain, cam and all of the gaskets.

That was the point I was trying to make.Don't ever count on getting out the door for less than a $1,000.

well i guess if we're talking about going into the shed and digging out all of our old used parts and throwing a motor together it could be a maypop for around $1000.00. It most likely won't make no where near the 500 h.p mark are last to go around the block.

This was not what this post was about. it was directed at the average engine builder to start by sourcing quality parts and building a cheaper engine from scratch to make reliable, streetable, long lasting small block chevy.

If you could build a 283 to make 500 h.p and hold together you really did not need to read this post, IT WAS NOT FOR YOU!!! do the search of the forum and you will see that i built a high h.p. 283 it had nothing for torque but it would run after 4000rpm. I replaced it as quick as i could with a 383.
