    Problems starting my 67 impala

327 was just rebuilt 2 weeks ago, was told I needed a new carb when it was finished. Replaced carb with an edelbrock 1406. Now car will not start. It turns but real slow. I replaced the battery, starter was replaced about 4 months ago. Where should I look next?

Need more info. Did the car start ok before you changed intake and carb? If so, is that the only thing you did?

Initial thoughts are that when you pulled the distributor to put on intake you have advanced the timing to the point where it won't crank. Recheck the position of the distributor relative to top dead center on number one.

    Just a place to start.

I did not replace the intake, just the carb. The car was running but idling high when I initally changed the carb. I turned the fast idle srew to lower the idle and then it cut off. I tryed turning the idle screw back to the way it was but still won't crank. Since the carb was still under warranty, I took it back and replaced it again. I still have it at stock config, but still nothing.

So it was starting and running ok, and as you were turning the idle screw it shut off and now cranks slow and won't start?

Exactly, but new carb and new idle screw. Still won't start.

Well, unless the motor decided to take a dump, or have some electical problem, I think the distributor may have been loose and turned to an advanced position. Check to see if the dist is tight.

There are alot of possibilities, but in the scenerio you outlined, I can't imagine what could happen just by turning the idle screw. I think that is just coincidental.

Cool. Now just find top dead center of #1 and turn the dist until it is close to pointing to that contact in the cap, and it should be close enough to fire. Then you can use a light to fine tune it.

Let us know if that did the trick.

If it is your distributor, which I think it is since you say you're having a hard time starting.. I have to agree with Itoldyouso.

Find TDC by bumping the motor over and watching the intake valve open then shut, as soon as it shuts, pop the distributor back in and make that rotor face the the contact on the cap that is going to cylinder #1.

She should turn over if you don't have any loose connections.. check for those and all your ground connections.

I had alot of electrical issues when I went to HEI just FYI.
