The Vortec heads will make a TON more torque than anything else available from the factory. They flow considerably more at all valve lifts. That means you can pack more air/fuel into the cylinders for a given cam duration/lift which means you can make more torque on a short duration cam. Using the short cam really holds back your engine because the valves are open for such a short time and it can't pull enough air into the cylinders. Often times, long duration/high lift cams (what we consider high revving cams) make more torque than short duration cams.

the grind # for the cam he had installed is x4270h this cam requires headers and rear gears and a slight stall. vortecs are the way to go especially if u plan on doing head work there about the same price as reworking yours there new and flow much much better the best design to hit the factory seen. but honestly why bother if your gonna sell the car for a real one save your money to put into that instead. do u plan to keep the motor if u sell this one then go for it spend the money. 3.73 would prolly be my selection also with this combo
