You do need self-aligning rockers. The old heads had pushrod guide holes, the new ones just have holes. So, for the new heads, the rocker arm was made with a groove that maintained its position on the top of the valve stem. Self-aligning roller tip rockers will have two washers on the ends of the roller that keep it from sliding off the valve stem.

I've read that if you step up to 1.6 rockers with vortecs that you should open up the push rod holes to prevent rubbing."It may be ugly, but it's SLOW!"

Thanks for the feed back, The intake we are using is a GM performance TBI vortec intake and the EGR is moved to the front with a port threaded to the driver side, were does the 96 and newer get the exhuast to supply the EGR from? I also found that the intake does not have a threaded port for the power brake tube. I`ll have to drill and tape this hole in the TBI plate boss. The rest of this project has gone without a problem..... Yet

The vortec truck engines pulled the exhaust feed from one of the exhaust manifolds. Take a look at a 96-99 truck and it will be clear. The tube was a rather long affair.....if you need, I have a couple that I can take a pic of.

What carb are you running? My power brake tube hooks up to the carb. There is a large threaded fitting on the back of the intake which is where I connected my transmission vacuum line.

The pictures would help. The dealer cannot give me a price on the tube with out the VIN #. This intake is going on a 1990 GM short block with TBI . The vortec heads were purchased from Summit along with the intake. If this EGR issue becomes to much of a pain I`ll remove it and plug the hole with a plate. What year is your P/U? Thanks

The reason for the VIN request is that there are at least two different Vortec configs, I have two different stock intake manifolds. I think that the GVW of the truck is the difference....one doesnt have EGR.
Attached is the pic of the tube installed and one laying on the floor. The tube cannot be cut, it is a thin stainless tube with an insulation jacket around it. The ends appear to be flared 37 degree style. I tried to cut one a few years ago but it collapsed under the load of a tubing cutter. The intake manifold fitting looks like a -10 or so flare to match the tube. Havent measured the manifold thread size. There is a stock Chevy block off plate for where the EGR valve bolts.Last edited by robot; 01-29-2007 at 11:32 AM.

I got the engine running today. EGR pluged and no service engine light can`t ask for much more than that. Engine runs great. I need to fit the stock"Y" pipe to the new flowtec headers, That should be fun!!!! Thanks for all the advice It really helped out with the top-end swap. Next is the programming issue does anyone know a good programmer?
Thank you Roger. .
