According to the 'guru's',,,street engines perform best with a dynamic compression ratio of 7.5-8.5 on 91 or better octane.Race engines using higher octane race gas can go 8.8-9.1,or higher if the rest of the engine is built accordingly. And best 'quench'(piston/head clearance) should be between .035-.045.Piston to valve safty margin is .100.Butttt,,,,if you are building an all-out race engine, ignore all the above. But you better know how to properly check these clearances if you are.Just my 2cents worth, good luck.Hey has that thing gotta Heme in it? No, it's a shevy not heme!

Sorry,I got wraped up in citing the 'particulars' that I didn't answer your question. The 1.780 compression height piston will be "about" .040 'in the hole' and thus reducing compression. So depending on gasket and head chamber size you could wind up with a low compression motor.I wouldn't waste my time, but thats just me.With the other piston, you have more flexability to taylor CR depending on gasket thickness & head combustion chamber size. Not sure what the .170 dome would give,,,11-12:1??? If so then detonation could be a problem. If this is a 'daily driver',a 1.805 comp.height,2 relief flat top would be what I'd recommend. It all depends on vehicle use and available fuel I guess.Hey has that thing gotta Heme in it? No, it's a shevy not heme!
Thank you Roger. .
