Hard Starting
I Have A Stock 350 In A 1965 Chevy Truck. Have A Elderbrock Intake And An Elderbrock Carb With Electric Choke. The Problem Is When I Drive A Little Ways And The Engine Is Hot I Shut The Engine Down And Go Back A Little While Later And It Want Start Back Up With Out A Lot Of Cranking. I Tried Adjusting The Carb And It Still Does The Same Thing. If Anyone Has Any Ideas Please Share This Is Aggravating. When I Hit The Starter I Want The Engine To Start Not Crank Over And Over Then Start.

Have you checked the timing? Fuel pump? Have you removed the air cleaner when this happens to see if there is fuel present. How hot is HOT?Charlie

Install a heat isolation spacer between the carb and the intake. Also check for fuel line up against a hot spot in the engine compartment. I think the fuel is boiling in the bowl due to heat soak after shutdown.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

I had something kinda like this happening and I looked at my springs and weights in the distributor-finally- and found that they were sticking and not fully closing back in like they should. I don't know if that's whats happening but it is an easy check. Just pop the cap off and take rotor bug off then take a peek at them to make sure.Just takes a minute and a quick look.

Is it turning over slow? Mine is doing that but I think it's a heat soaked soleinoid/starter, I replaced the starter but it's still there so I may try a heat blanket.

I Was Thinking It May Be My Choke But How Do You Check An Electric Choke To See If It Is Working Properly? I Put A Elderbrock Fuel Pump On It Because I Thought The Regular One May Have To Much Pressure. That Didn't Help And I Have Changed The Timing Several Times And That Didn't Change I. I Put An Elderbrock Fuel Line On It Also. The Only Thing I Haven't Tried Is Putting The Isolation Spacer Under The Carb And Checking The Springs. Where Can I Find An Insolation Spacer?

Try opening the throttle slightly before you start cranking engine , my set-up in my 34 was like that needed to just press petal slightly would fire right off. If left to cool 2-3 hrs this was not needed. never quite figured out problem but found solution.31 5w

Maybe, you have a leak in the carb...causing it to be flooded.

I disassembled the carb and replaced the float valves and pump. When I put it back together and crank the truck I noticed that air was sucking in through the automatic choke at the bottom where there is a hole in it. I went to the parts house and looked at another new carb of the same type and it had the same hole. Is there a diaphram in the choke?

Try the spacer. The carb is probably heat soaking and empting the fuel bowls. If you have a electric fuel pump you can let it run a few seconds before you start cranking. May help. Even with the spacer, if the engine compartment is hot, you may have some problems. IMO part of this problem is due to the low quality of fuel we get today. I always had the same problem with the edelbrock. Went to a Holley. If it's not broke, fix it anyway.
Thank you Roger. .
