main cap broke, what should i do?

i want to build a 383 for my nova. someone i work with's dad has a 4 bolt block out of an 88 truck. he's said he let me have it for $200. the problem is that he broke one of the main caps cuz he put it on backwards of sumthin. he bought a new cap said i just need to get the cap matched and line bore the block. another friend of mine's dad had that problem with his 454 and he said that i'm going to be getting into lots of money if i get this block. he said that i can't just get the one cap, that i'd have to get all of them and the machining is goin to cost lots of $$ and it might not be worth it. now i figured i'd have to get it machined anyway for the 400 crank, but i've never done this before and i don't know if the block and crank get machined or just the block or just the crank.

Also, with an '88 block, you're getting into some of the newer components like 1-piece rear main seals and roller cams. You won't be able to use an OEM 400 crank because they were never made for 1-piece seals as far as I know.

what remand blocks, any of you have any experience with em. i don't really want a new block cuz i don't wanna have to deal with seasoning it and the shifting and shit, and i dont really want an entire rebuilt one cuz i'm gonna gut for the 383.

    366

The 366 was a tall deck truck block used in medium duty trucks in the 70's and 80's or so. Don't waste your money on one for any high performance purposes.
