Thread: Carb Gasket Question

I am ready to put my Holley 600 back on the intake. I need the gasket, but seeing the old one had me wondering.

It is the 4-hole (all equal size) base, so the 4-hole gasket sits on top of my Edelbrock Performer RPM intake, which has the intake area split in two (with just a strip of metal separating the two halves). When the gasket sits on top of this, there is nothing to support it as the air/fuel moves through.

My question: If there is no gasket sealer there, what is keeping the edges of the gasket from flapping in the breeze when all that air/fuel is moving through? It seems that a gasket with no inside portion would be best, but the one for sale at the auto parts store does not match the carb edges.

Should I just go with the 4-hole gasket and assume that all is well inside?

Get the open base gasket.

Barring that, I'd cut the gasket with a razor blade/knife/Exacto to match the intake manifold.

Bolt the carb down, then remove it.
Cut the gasket to the witness marks left behind.

Seems you could find an open style base gasket at Autozone or Pep Boys or similar.
Normally I'd recommend a real parts house, but sometimes the gaskets are hanging on the rack near the carb section.

Having said that, a NAPA store is a good bet to have the part you need most times.
