You probably wont see low 12's with stock vortecs. I know it's easy to spend other peoples money but I would either run the vortec's until you are able to get a better set of heads or just start now with a better set. I would not invest the money into the vortec's, if you were going to do that sell your heads on e-bay (it's crazy what they sell for) take that money and the money it would cost for valves, springs etc. plus machining and you would be close to a new set of aluminums, and the aluminum would help with your compression as far as detonation.

It will come down to the weight of the car, the gearing, and the stall. Not to mention traction also. It takes 400hp to push a 3500lb car into the 11's when everything else is setup right.
There was no arguing. Typhoon asked a question that was revelant to cranks and the info I wrote should help you also when you decide what to do for a crank.RAY

Hey Ray,
I want to thank you for that explanation of the differences in the cranks, depending on the rod length. Your post was totally within the parameters of this topic. Some say ignorance is bliss, I say that it is just ignorant. So thanks for causing me to become none ignorant.
I have heard from several machinist that they dislike Scat cranks because they are usually too hard to balance. But with what you have pointed out to me now so wonderfully, I believe that these cranks which have had difficulty in being balanced, is due to the fact that someone ordered the wrong crank for the rod they were using.
Just two days ago I was looking at ordering a new rotating assembly and the options of different cranks came up with the parts store clerk, and he too did not know why there was a difference in cranks depending on the rod length.
Myself, I thought that just maybe the chamfer was different or something like that, but I never would have suspected balancing was the determining factor.
Strange how sometimes one learns something new even when the topic isn’t even geared to that. So again, thanks my friend.
YOU, have a great day.

Might be best to know what your piston, pin, and rod weights are before buying a crank to make sure their weight is ok for balancing with the Crank you buy..... A little checking now can save you $$$ and grief down the road....
Sometimes I've gained a lot of really good information on relplies that may not seem directly related to the primary thread... Good information is good information no matter who it comes from or how it is gained.... Just a small group here who consistently provide answers to questions that are accurate and well thought out..... and occasionally the topic does wander a bit.... but I sure wouldn't want to allienate anyone who has good information, next post might not bring any responses.... Dave, have I ever told you that I love you. I am going to take your advise.
BTW, in my judgement, every post on this thread has been pertinent to a sbc build, especially the posts that dealt with the differences between a 350 journal and a 400 as well as the post that dealt with “30 year old has been 400 cranks” which have been turned to fit a 350 journal and then that these can be used in a 400 again, wow. And as if I ever would. Why would anyone use a fatigued crank which probably needs another machining job before one can use it and all this at a cost of $150.00 when one can buy a stronger brand new one for around $200 not to mention the cost of bearing spacers!!!!???
The net is a breeding ground for misunderstanding and the sooner the poster learns to add a little salt, the better off everyone will be. Think about it, even when two or three people who all happen to have English as their primary language and these then communicate, how often do we have to ask the speaker to say it again or in different words, explaining what they meant. Rarely when one is in person, do we jump on the listener for misunderstanding but rather in an apologetic manner, the speaker tries to communicate again without being rude. At least that’s what I have witnessed in those who are seasoned men.
Having said that, it would appear that the younger generation has lost that. The moment they see an opportunity to defame someone, to jeer anyone, to mock one etc, they go for the throat, and when push comes to shove, all is in jest supposedly and that is their apology which really translates into being arrogant.
Hey, the weather has really turned around out here. It is 7 C above today and all the snow is gone. To the foreigner this translates into 43 above F. Oh, wait a minute, maybe I am the alien. Wonder what the temperature is then? Oops, I’ve done it now, I’ve changed topics. I was going to delete this part but I had already clicked on “POST”.Objects in my rear view mirror are a good thing unless,.... they have red and blue lights flashing.

Jumping in here just for fun.... One other thing with the Crank designed for 6" rods. If you use a 5.7 rod the counter weights will hit the bottom of the pistons. ( Know this from personal exp. ) So best to match.

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
