How about if I went to a shorter cam like a XE 274 ? Or what would you guys recomend? The 284 is what Comp recomended I thought it was abit long. And right now it is the easiest ( cheapest) thing to alter.
Thanks Ed

I am looking at the Lunati 276--233-241 and the XE 274--230-236 They are close to each othere but the lunati has more lift

Check your DCR with all of those cams. I think you will find the XE cams may put you over 8.5, particularly the XE-268. My 383 is the same as yours except my head chamber is 68cc, and I could not run the XE-274 and chose the Magnum 280 instead. DCR is 8.46 with the 280 Magnum, which is okay with 92 octane. Anything over 8.5 and you risk detonation on pump gas. I think that is why CompCams recommended the larger cam with more overlap in order to bleed off some compression.

The Lunati puts the DCR at 8.31 . The Comp 274 at 8.37 And I can still get 93 sometimes 94. The lunati has more lift. If I remember correctly I was told Given two cams with close to the same profile -use the one with more lift.
The XE 268 would put the DCR at 8.55Last edited by 53 Willys; 01-19-2007 at 02:23 PM.

You know guys, it really does my heart good to see you figuring this stuff.
Willys, If absolute power were my only goal, I too would choose the higher lift if all the other specs were close between two cams. But if this is a street motor, you may consider that the lower lift cam is gonna be easier on the valve springs and consequently on the cam lobes over a period of time. Just a thought.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

There is a calculator on the KB piston site
I use the one from this site -this one is downloadable. There is also some explanation of DCR here

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
