327 : Valves hitting valve cover

A while I was having a problem with my engine backfiring. I took it to my local machanic and he said it was the valves hitting the valve cover that was causing it and then he proceeded to charge me an arm and a leg to fix it.

Why would your valves hit the cover and how easy can this be fixed yourself?

Or maybe it was still stock studs and some of them pulled loose???? I'm also curious what his fix was....and what the problem was...

yah thats like a $100 at the most, and $100 would get you some pretty sweet valve covers. when you got the motor back did it have new valve covers, i just dont see how that would cause backfiring i would think it would make horrible noises. any backfiring problems i have had has either been from timing problems or fuel delivery problems...hmmm im curious

the only way it could cause backfiring is if studs were pulling out... and then yes mechanics can charge an arm and a leg to fix that, but most of us prefer cash.. unless the arm and leg are attached to the hot blonde.... then we can negociate

    Oh My!!!

This sounds like the time I sent my wife down to the local tire store to have a tire fixed on her van.
The van had less than 10,000 miles on it and they told her it needed new struts.
I had to go down there and have a little "chat" with the people.
The poor kid that was working on it was about 18.
What's even worse his boss is a good friend of mine.
I really get tired of people trying to take advantage of people.

yup i have no respect for mechanics that try to sell something the car doesn't need...... my shop does not let that fly our service writers actually come out and see whats going on, we let them know the minimum that needs to be repaired and the reccomended to make sure that everything is perfect.... we deal with a lot of corporate accounts too though where they only want the minimum... they wont even get allignments they'd rather buy tires every 10k because of horrible allingment than spend $35

Sorry for the slow replies I am in South Africa, I think my time zoe is at least 8 hours ahead of yours

I also can not imagine what this guy did. It was more than a year ago that this happened, and back then I knew absolutly nothing about V8 engines. I thought I would run it on this site, since this is really the most informative site I have found

    Thanks everybody
