I told the guy with the L98 350 for $175 I wanted to come get it this weekend, but he hasn't responded to any of my E-mails since around monday-tuesday. I can't get ahold of him.

sounds like the usual flakyness you get from people on craigslist
just because your car is faster, doesn't mean i cant outdrive you... give me a curvy mountain road and i'll beat you any day

Yeah, I asked him if I could get my money back if the block turned out cracked and he hasn't replied since. It sucks, because I was willing to go pick it up today. That probably means he knows something he doesn't want me to know.

Goto a repitable shop that will stand behind the block...................The 50 to 100 bucks you save on a unknown is not worth the dissapointment or financial hassel later in the project, especially on your first engine.
Valve covers/pullies/water pumps/carbs/intakes/oil pan/balancer/flywheel flex plate/ crank/pistons...etc,all these things can be checked out visually or professionally very cheaply .The block is the foubdation for all of these parts to fit into and needs the most checking/machining which is almost impossible to just visually check or cost 20 bucks to get checked out and any part bought off of a individual is usually on a as is basis.
That being said it depends on the condition of the rest of the parts.A complete motor in good condition with a cracked block may still give you your monies worth at 175 bucks another 100 to 200 for good verified block from reputable licenced business that will stand behind there word and you are missing very little to have a running motor.
Its gunna take longer than u thought and its gunna cost more too(plan ahead!)

It looks like I'm going to have to hold off on getting the 350 right now. I need a few things for my Vette right now, and I'll have to use a portion of my engine money on it. But if I can find a complete engine for around $125-150, I can probably still get one.
