WELL, maybe its not all good. after a 5 min. drive it seemed normal, then later today i went into town and after a couple minutes it was doing the same thing. checked timing--good. tomorrow im gonna check the float bowl to make sure its not full of dirt or water. i think i will still get a new vac advance. what about the coil??? once again this only happens when im ON the gas in 3rd or 4th gear (read: 2nd or 3rd--1st is the granny)

you can look at the coil they do hold up very good try looking at the carb for dirt and fuel filtter and fuel pickup in the fuel tank. spark plugs /wires .were are the spark plugs gap is at. is there any slop in the dist shaft up down side to side.and you may want to look at the voltage regulatorLast edited by pat mccarthy; 04-04-2007 at 06:15 AM.

This thread really brings back memories. It's been a long time since I installed points......
In '57 or so my mentor friend taught me how to use the Sun distributor machine to set points, dwell etc. It wan't long before the cut one set apart for 2 springs came up. Then the idea of adding a second set of points to increase the dwell and spark at high speed came along. With some drilling and tapping and a bit of machine work (everyone has machine shop class in high school don't they??) and I had dual points and a distributor that could go 7500 rpm which was a good bit more than the SBC could run back then.
As for the reliability and spare parts, everybody had a spare set of stock points and condensers in the glove box along with the right tools. Most of us had nice timing lights and a dwell meter too. This was about all we carried for spare stuff and there weren't many times we walked home or hitched a ride. No cell phone by the way either.
Today my 1 ton diesel truck has spare fuel pump, starter contacts, dual big big batteries, fuel filters, belts, floor jack and jack stands, big lug wrench, 3000 watt gen, elect impact, US and metric sockets from small to large, US and metric end wrenches, US and metric Torx and hex set, gear puller, code scanner (Smarty), 5 gal diesel, 911 diesel additive, tire repair kit, air compressor, ground mat(to crawl on), mech gloves, cold weather clothing gear, small Coleman heater, tire chains, 20k recovery strap, come-along , as well tools unique to changing Injector pumps, tarp for rainy day repairs, just to name the major spare parts and tools I carry. All have been used at least once and I've got 35 miles on my walking shoes. And someone asked me why I have a 1 ton truck for a daily driver. I have to have it to carry my spare parts.41 Willys 350 sbc 6-71 blower t350, 9in, 4 link

maybe you should buy a less reliable truck so you can use your mobile auto shop more often! --sounds like a sweet set-up--go anywhere and know you are always gonna get home.

It least the I-6 Cummins is fixable almost anywhere if you have tools and parts, not like a couple of popular V-8's that have to arrive on the hook and have the body lifted for repairs.
Today I really loaded it down with 3 empty cardboard banker boxes for the storage garage. Made it downand back no problems.
One nice thing about the Cummins is that there are no points and condenser and no spark plugs to wear out. I kinda miss not carrying a nail clipper with the handy point file on it.41 Willys 350 sbc 6-71 blower t350, 9in, 4 link

I'd be lost without my clippers with the handy point file......I wish I was rich enough to get the 007 super spy set with a decoder and laser beam thingy.
I wanted to complain about this NZ slang business, but I see it was resolved before it mattered. LOL..
