noob question
how do you turn an engine over without turning it on . on a 350 smallblock carbed .

Undo the coil wire so that no spark can reach the sparkplugs. Then engage the starter the normal way, using the ignition key.Old guy hot rodder

and if the motor is not installed in a car, remove all the plugs and put a 5/8 socket on the balancer nut.

Moon's got the "out of car" solution. Be sure to put a little lube on the threads if you're using a bolt that is not intended for running in the car. If it's in the car, go get a remote starter button. Future reference; Install remote starter buttons and install them out of the way (asthetics) so you can "bump" the engine around for valve clearances or timing mark checks etc. Brian's suggestion is really good. Sometimes the compression on a warmed over motor causes "backspin" for valve adjustments. Either way will get you where you want. Might be helpful to remove the plugs when "Spinning" the motor over with starter assist
