1967 small journal 327
Hi I am new to your site.
I need help on my engine no one I have found seems to know the older stuff. I have a 1967 327 small journal, I have a turbo charger Id like to stick on it as far as the engine goes the stories I have been told are mild to wild. Can you help me?
thanks

I don't think the small journal 2 bolt will be enough for the turbo. Turbos need a good bottom end.The small journal crank may not be stout enough for that.

what are my options with this engine?

Be patient and shop for your turbo needs. there are too many classic projects that could use the small journal 327. DOn't waste it by ditching it, just find a buyer or project for it. Then shop for some stout components to give the turbo idea a try.

Gasser, It's possible to make anything run well under all conditions. We just wish the best for evrybody and with out having our hands on it, we like to pull back a bit and be conservative because we cause a cast iron shower at somebody else's expense. I'm sure you have experienced the "This thing is so bitchin', I need more power". And then the customer gets a tad greedy and pushes harder for more than is reasonable. That was my intention for my post. When I was raised on the farm, I was taught, "Plant a 5 dollar tree, dig a 10 dollar hole". I believe in C.Y.A. So, I will always help in strong builds and keep the thing running. It Ain't no fun fun walking home when somebody told you it would work and the last thing you heard was "BOOM!" A lot of guys are good wrench turners but not all possess the experience to make it right. Thanks for your posts, everybody here helps out.Last edited by nitrowarrior; 04-16-2007 at 04:39 PM.

The cast iron shower is not appealing. The internals are not stock it has scat h beam rods the pistons are not purchased the stock crank fortunatly is not cast. I have no intention on blowing this up. It came out of a 1967 impalla ss fastback the unfortunate part is my parents left it in the barn where it settled in the dirt and mud and rusted the frame. In the future I would like the put it in a classic car.

Good attitude with the project. Now, after a bit of sleep I can calm down from my rant. I never want to see or have anyone ruin a good thing. Let me put you to sleep for a minute. Small journals create less frictional load. Good thing. They also have less "beef" for strength and less memory for "relaxing back to a porportionate state (flex and return after twisting and winding up). The crank is a Scat? good. The block is a good core to use and being a two bolt, the main caps have a tendency to "walk" within the block surfaces. Breakage of the caps is not common but can happen. If boost and proper tuning is kept reasonable, it is a good process to work with. If you plan on going hard core, splayed caps to get the outer bolts to follow the centerline of the cylinders are necessary to aleviate block stress and cap "walk". Keep it simple and soft for a start and don't get greedy. You can make this work.

No im not going to get greedy A matter of fact I think I just found a company that makes a main girdle that will fit. The turbo I have is rated @400-700rwh with a solid 32-34lb boost I believe in moderation the waist gait and blowoff are adjustable down to 7 lbs and if I need to go lower it will just need to be set down some more. This car will be tuned on a dyno by pro. The only problem with the guy Im looking at he is more computer smart and does not know the older blocks, but does seem to know carbs some im looking at a 650 mighty demon it appears to have better adjustments.
thanks for the replys if you come in contact with any more info it is greatly appreciated

Very tunable, stay on the safe side to get the feel. Use your experts who will have their hands on it. You'll have a base point to work with and you're gonna enjoy this build.
And a Happy Birthday Wish for Mr. Spears. Hope you can have a great one. :)
