starter has problem turning my engine

    Hi Guys & Gals
this my first post here. Looks like a very good forum.
    Now, my problem.
I have a relatively new GM crate engine (1000 miles) in my car. It is a ZZ430 clone (Fast Burn 385 w/Hot cam). Most of the time my starter has problems to turn it, then sometimes it spins it like a top. The starter is also new.
Can it be my timing is not correct? ( I had a shop dyno tune it and he set the timing) I would think that a regular GM starter could turn a engine with 9.6 to 1 compression ratio, no problem. I have double checked my connections and all is OK.
Somebody told me it hangs together with the vaccum advance distributor...
    I don't know.
Can anyone help or give me some suggestions on what to try???
    Thanks in advance

Not sure what you mean by "it hangs with the vaccum advance distrubutor". It has no connection what so ever other than a hot engine and base timing set a bit too high. Do you have good luck when it's cold? Does it show these signs when it's hot? Always check your starter drive to flexplate/flywheel tooth clearance. Too tight, and it will bind. Aftermarket rebuilds are not cut out for this motor. With the sound investment you made, I suggest a gear reduction starter. Do some shopping and you'll get a good deal.
What if the "Hokey Pokey" is what it's really all about?

As warrior mentioned, if it only happens when the motor is hot, the starter may be getting too much heat from the exhaust system and binding up. Chevys are notorious for this.

An easy fix from the good old days when we actually had fuel to run high compression is to place a switch on the dash that will cut off power to the ignition till the engine is spinning good, then hit the switch and light the fire. Cheap, easy, and it works.
