Too Much Cam?
My friend wants to build a 350 engine, he bought a Crane 302 H06 camshaft not realizing it is cut on a 106 lsa, it has .500 lift and 300 duration, my question is will it run or not, if so will it run on pump gas (super)?
We were goint to build the engine to have about 10.3 to 1 compression with a dished piston, but, he desided to put a set of 40 over flat tops in it and wants to use the same small chambered heads, that way the compression will be around 11 to 12 to 1 compression, which is what the camshaft card recommends, at that compression will that crane cam run on super unleaded pump gas?

In my opinion, possibly, but not for long.
With aluminum heads, a VERY tight squish of 0.030" to 0.035", very modest ignition timing, polished and totally de-burred combustion chambers, cold plugs, no EGR or PCV, 160 thermostat and possibly water injection, you might squeak it by. Like I said, that's my opinion. Other's opinions may vary.PLANET EARTH, INSANE ASYLUM FOR THE UNIVERSE.

...don't know if this helps or not but my 413 small block Chev w/ aluminum 76 CC heads, 10 to 1 compression, flat top pistons {don't know the squilsh}, a 230/236 @ .50" cam w/ .523 lift, 36 degrees total timing pings REALLY bad on regular. On supreme it doesn't ping..... Bill

We do still have another set of dish pistons to get the compresion to 10.3 to 10.5, will the cam work with that?

Better lay in a BIG supply of octane booster!!! With aluminum heads and all the other things Tech mentioned you can get away with 10.5 compression.. Cast iron heads should be down a point from that. Why not just get a different cam and put the compression where you can live with it on the street?Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Well we finished building the engine today, I didn't have any high hopes of it firing with the huge cam and tight lsa along with the 11.5-12 to 1 compression, but somehow we got away with the high compression, we drove it for about 10 to 15 minutes and it sounds wicked and pulls harder than anything I've ever driven(so far), we also put in a turbo 350 tranny and a 2800 to 3200 stall, not sure of the rear gears yet. We havn't got on it hard yet but we didn't get any detonation on the regular unleaded gas that was in the tank.
He wanted to be able to street drive it but judging by how it turns the rpms going down the road he isnt going to be doing much of that, it does sound awesome going down the road at about 3,000 to 3,500 rpms.
What kind of timing should we put in it? Right now its just set to where it starts the easiest which is very easy, all you have to do is hit the key and it fires immediatly, it also has the heaviest springs from the mr gasket curve kit in it. What do you recommend as far as timing?
