Most of us don't Know that "earth" is the british word for ground. All small block chevies have a negative ground in the USA. If you 're in England they have a negative earth.
I never used a one wire alternator so I don't know how to hook it up. I'm sure someone else can help with that.

Assuming here that you're talking about a single terminal lug on the back of the alternator, which should be internally regulated.

Run a 10 awg wire from the batt. lug on the starter solenoid to the lug on the alternator. If you are using an ammeter, the wire should go "through" the gauge on the way to the alternator. If you're using a volt meter then that would be connected at the same lug on the solenoid by a separate wire, 14-16 awg. The alternator is grounded (earthed?) through it's case, to the bracketry, to the engine block. Make sure you have a ground (earth) connection from the block to the frame, usually from one of the starter mounting bolts as that will improve starter performance.

One other comment on ground (earth) circuits. Paint, corrosion, and dirt are it's enemy.
