U Pick My Gears And Converter
I finally have settled on my motor build due to cost and availability for the most part.
I changed my mind on a 4" bore for the 283 and went .060,which is a 292 c.i.
Here's what I have to work with, for the time being,,,again due to lack of funds and trying to be practical for a street vehicle(weekend toy).
Ported 305HO heads,silvolite pistons that are a miserable .040 in the hole,a 9.0:1 CR;a clevite copy of a L79 cam with .447 lift,300 duration.I have to choose between a Offy 360 or an older Torker 1 intake with either a holley 600 or a 650 double pumper.
I am thinking that this setup should make it very streetable but yet want as much out of it as possible.
What converter and rear gears would you use for the best accelleration in a 1/4 mile but not be to much for a little street driving?
Go ahead and criticize the heads and small c.i. motor if you must,,, but if you do then please suggest improvements that go with this build because for now,it's what I have."On a r-e-e-e-e-al,,,,qu-i-i-i-i-i-et night,,,,,,,,(whisper),,,,,,,, you can hear a Ford rust!!!"

My stock 283 had 3.55 now 3.7 gears. It takes off better but could use 4.11 with the 4 spd Muncie it has in it. I think the double pumper carb may be a bit to much (Gas). My Vac sec 600 hlly works better than the 650 edlbk that it had before. Need to figure what tires you will run and what the max rpm is you want to cruise at, then select the gears.

id say 4.11's with a 3000-3500 it'll be a little grumpy on the street but you say not to much street driving, or you could go 373's and a 2800-3200 stall. the 283's love deep gears trust me! try driving 4.88's and a 4500 stall on the street went and talked to the local rearend guy today the 5.13's are going in very soon! took the 4500 out last year in place of a 3500, putting the 4500 back in with 5.13's oh yeah it'll be fun.

What car are you putting this in, weight play's a factor in converter selection. Not knowing how well the heads will flow at higher rpm's I would probably stick to 3:73's, if you are running a tall tire 4:10's might be alright.
If your looking for someone to set up your gears Babbit Bearing on Frank Rd.does a good job at a reasonable price.

It's going in an 85 S10 longbed, weight somewhere around 3200,,I think,,not sure of the weight. It will be lowered some, due to being an unsightly longbed.
And it may not see much freeway driving,at least no long trips.
The heads don't flow great obviously, but the 3rd gen.Camaro guys say they are comparible to the old double hump heads,the(1.94/1.50) double hump ones."On a r-e-e-e-e-al,,,,qu-i-i-i-i-i-et night,,,,,,,,(whisper),,,,,,,, you can hear a Ford rust!!!"
Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
