    Budget Chevy 283 Build

I have a 1966 283 short block . How would you build it to make up to 350hp on a budget . Its for a big street car 3800lbs auto trans 308gear . The bore and crank are good . What heads cam carb and intake would you run .

The 283 is one of my favorite motors, but unless you need to keep it in the car, I'd build a 350, more cc's, cheap to buy, it will use the same bolt on brackets, there is no replacement for displacement.

This is a nice clean engine . And it has a forged crank . I think it will only need rings and bearings . I want to install it in a 1970 Monte Carlo for good MPG and some power . I have a set of 1983 #416 305 heads 184in/150ex that are 58cc . I may clean them up do a mild port job with new springs . Still not sure what cam/ intake To use . This car has a TH350 . I may run a 2200 to 2400 stall .

I'd run a Performer RPM (non Air-Gap) on it. Heavy car, small engine needs some torque and the dual plane will help with milage. As for cam, I'd check out the Voodoo and pick what matches the rpm range I want the engine to work in. With the heavy car, smaller is better.

I know I should use one of my 350s but this is a nice engine . I am looking for 15city/21high MPG and low 15teens . I may go with the Performer 2101 with a 600 AFB . And Crane Z cam 212/218dur at 050 with 446/459 lift . Also the #416 184in/150ex 58cc 305 heads with some mild porting

Don't block the heat cross over in the intake. It helps vaporize the fuel for better milage. If you had a wideband O2 you could get the cruise as lean as about 16:1 or more. My 383 in my Luv gets 18mpg and runs 10.80's. I drilled and tapped all my bleeds and restrictions in my Holley 750dp and recalibrated it. I cruise 60mph @ 3000 rpm.

    Combo:
    383cid 11.2:1 CR 3.750 stroke X 4.030 bore
Dart Iron Eagle 200cc/64cc home ported heads
Victor Jr. Intake 1" super sucker home ported
Holley 750dp recalibrated 13.5 idle AFR, 16:1 cruise AFR, 12.5 WOT AFR
    Comp solid roller 288/296 252/258 .630/.630 106/104 1.6 rockers
MSD billet distributor 6AL box 18* initial 34* total @3200 rpm No vac.
    Th-350 4500 stall 4.11 gear 30X13.5-15 tires

Small inch engines work a lot better in light weight (2600 pounds and less) cars. For a big heavy 3800 pound tank I'd be looking for all the cubes I could find and concentrate on building the engine to create torque....

The car is way to heavy.
You need the torque or a 383 or a big block to move the car or you could run a 5.13 gear with the 283.

15's will be hard to get with what your putting together. My 3400lb 55 ran 15.3 at 95mph with 4 spd and 3.55 gears. The High gears you ae talking about will be hard to get the car going. Mine was really hard to get moving, I changed to 3.70 gears and changed to a holley 600 and its better. It is borderline though as far as being able to drive it on the highway. 4.56 would be the most I could run for performance but would be limited to being comfortable at about 50 mph on the street driving.

It ran a 15.90 with a stock high mile 350 QJET no headers dual exhaust set up . The car lifts and goes . And I am thinking about going with 2200 to 2400 stall . Also going to remove the not working A/C install 1"5/8 long tube headers . This should help the car slim down a bit . I had a 1969 Chevelle with a stock 307 . I installed a non EGR truck intake/QJET . A set of headers and a Mallory Unilite conversion . It ran 15.35 I am thinking the monte will have more in it and should do the same .

Gasser, I am assuming you meant 302, not 402. If you can tell me how to increase my 283 by 119 ci, please do tell.

and old top fuel racer's website i was on the other day talked about how they added a 1" inch moldex welded stroker crank and with a bore job and a mighty pan rail grinding for the rod clearance, you ended up with 402, said they didnt live long< but i dont think anything did when it was on 95% + nitro P.S FORT REILY!? my uncle was in the big red one back in the late 70's!
