Been interested in the topic. My older brother had a Camero SS when I got back from the service in '70. It had a 4-speed and a really hot motor. He said that he had to order the motor separate from the car, because Chevrolet wasn't allowed to put that particular motor in the car at the factory, BUT that the dealership could pull the factory-installed motor and drop this motor in if he ordered it. He did. He said that it was a special 302 CI called a "Cimarron". There was no question that it was "hot" for its time.
Can anybody verify this? I've talked to a lot of Chevy guys and only have had one to even seem to know what I was talking about.
As a side note, I thought I was going to die just a mile from the house, riding with him in this SS after spending a year in the "land of the Jolly Green". That was the last time I rode with him.I thought I was broke 'til I bought a streetrod

I asked the missus what she wanted for Xmas and She said 'nothing' would make her happier than a diamond necklace. So I got her nothing... '
