Thumbs up chev 302's back from the dead

Well after going to the local machine shop to drop off my dads heads and B.S.ing with the guys there about there proctject they had got done and were going to run this spring. Come to find out they made a modern 302 chev You know how you can buy main bearing shims to put a 350 or 327 crank into a 400 block? well these guys did just that but made shims to put a small journal 283 crank into a large journal 350 block ok try to fallow me on this and read carfully they took 2 large journal main caps and installed sleeves (or dowls) into the caps and using nuts and bolts so you can pull it apart and put it back together in the same exact spot every time. then they trued it to large journal main spec making the hole round. now you have a jig then they installed used large journal main bearings into the jig and machine them to a small journal main spec & cut the sides off the 1 large journal thrust bearing then file notches for the small journal main bearings you now have shims to put into a large journal block to put in a small journal 283 or 327 crank into But the motor they had put together is cool its a late 80's early 90's TBI 350 1 peace rear main seal block they used their shims they made also a main seal adaptor to use a 2 peace seal in a 1 peace seal block with Dart 64cc heads and a duel quad Edelbrock intake with 2 Edelbrock carbs and as a all roller motor

and also they had mentioned that all chev cranks 1964 and older are steel instead of cast iron maybe in 1965 also cause they could have had cranks left over to use up???

    I just have one question.
Why would you go and do all this work when you can buy a set of caps of $65??
If I am reading this right??

Eric maybe you did read this wrong,
its not about buying any caps i was just saying they used 2 main caps and bolted them together [( )] to make a jig and machine out used large journal bearings into shims for putting small journal cranks into large journal blocks.

is not that hard to do if you have a line bore you can turn the spacers in a lathe and slit them then clamp them in or can be held with small counter sunk flat heads and line bore it that way it is dead nuts not a big fan of spacer under my main bearings

i don't know i thought it was cool how they fabricated it out and B.S.ing with them for 2 hours Jack the owner is in his 60's and plans to build one using a vortec 350 motor and destroking it to a 302 for his rod. but the guy who had that motor done is putting it in his 31 model A roadster. plus there are aftermarket main bearing shims for putting a 350 crank into a 400 block. these guys at the machine shop are making their own to put 283 cranks into 350 blocks which i thought was quite clever.

Don't they know that there's a bearing set to put the 350 sized crank into the small journal block?

I think I would rather try my luck with boring a 283 block to 4" . And running the stronger S/J 327 rods that still only have 11/32 rod bolts . The 327 I am making is a L/J 1971 350 block with 1972 307 crank it has the stronger rods with 3/8 sps bolts . COOL
