Balance My 383???
HI GROUP! MY 383 HAS SCAT RODS AND CRANK,5.7 RODS AND A CAST 3.75 CRANK.MY QUESTION IS WHEN I TRY TO INSTALL MY NEW HARMONIC BALANCER,THE CRANK SNOUT ONLY GOES HALF WAY THROUGH BEFORE THE END HITS THE CRANK GEAR. I BOUGHT THE NEW BALANCER FOR A 78 400. IT TURNS OUT IT IS THE SAME AS THE OLD ONE.IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE BALANCER SHOULD BE ON MORE THAN IT IS. SHOULD I CUT THE BALANCER HUB DOWN TO BRING IT CLOSER TO THE TIMING COVER OR DOES SOMEONE MAKE ONE THAT WILL WORK.THERE IS A BAZILLION 383s IN USE,IM JUST NOT FAMILIAR WITH WHO TO CALL OR WHERE TO GET THINGS.I BELIEVE THIS ENGINE IS EXTERNALLY BALANCED,THE DAMPER IS 8 INCHES IN DIAMETER WITH MACHINING DONE ON THE INERTIA RING AND THERE IS A THIN WEIGHT ON THE FLEXPLATE.THANKS FOR ANY HELP!!!

no you should not cut on any thing when you put the bottom timing gear on the crank did you check it with a strait edge so the bottom gear is not hanging out . the crank nose is never flush to the end of the damper it about 3/4 or so from the end of the damper. i have had to cut the bottom gear to get it square with the top gear you have a one pice rear seal 350 ? you need to know what it is set up for some are external and will need a 400 flex plate or fly wheel and a 400 damper did you buy it as a kit ? i do not balance any external mass with out the real damper and fly wheel that going to be used did it ever get it balanced ?Last edited by pat mccarthy; 03-05-2008 at 10:15 PM.

The Nose Of The Crank Is An Inch And A Quarter,1 1/4,from The End Of The Damper Front.the Block Is A 2 Piece Rear Seal 350 Block. It Was On A Stand When I Bought It,was Running And Just Pulled Out Of A Camaro Because Someone Overtightened A Rocker And It Ate A Cam Lobe.the Balancer And Flexplate Were External Balance.

Does the bolt catch the threads? If so, and you can screw it in some before the washer makes contact with the hub, it is most likely right. You don't cut it for sure.RAY

Ok gang. It's been awhile. With everything that was going on taking care of my mom's affairs and making a few needed mods to the Healey, it was June before anything really got rolling on this...
