04 5.3 questions
I'm looking for some ideas for increasing my horsepower on my 04 5.3 Silverado.
I know my truck is rated at about 295 HP right now stock. Ideally I'd like to try to get another 100-150 HP out of it.
I'm wondering if a K&N filter would work well and if a cold air intake would net much of a difference over just a K&N?
I am wondering about getting a different cat-back exhaust system would work too?
I was thinking of getting a chip or have been looking at the Super Custom Timing Pro (Racers Package) that is due out any time. I am thinking that this tuner package in combination with some Nitrous might do the trick.
What kind of stock pistons does my motor have? Can the motor handle a 100-150 occasional shot of nitrous?
If anyone has any real numbers on the filter, exhaust, tune and nitrous I'd really appreciate it!!!
Thanks,
Dan

Dan,
I have an 01 Silverado with a 5.3. I did a little research on the K&N filter and box. According to them it only adds 7 hp and that is at 5000+ RPM. Since I spend very little time in that RPM range I decided to leave well enough alone. Now it might make more difference in combination with some of the other changes you mentioned.
Hope that helps a little
PatOf course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong!

Pat,
Here is something I found.

My only question is that this test was on a 03 Chevy. I have an 04 and I know that they got a HP boost from 02 but not sure if it was from 02 to 03, or 03 to 04???
If there was no change in HP from 03 to 04, then this filter and cold air set up would be a nice enhancement. But if Chevy's jump in HP was from 03 to 04 and if they did it with a similar improvement to the air intake, then there may be nothing left to improve on the air intake at this point.
Thank you Roger. .
