magneto help
Hey guys at the moment chasing some infor regarding an ignition system for my coupe... At the moment i have a 383 Chev making around 530Hp using a HEI distributor, this was all good until i had to put the engine in the car and the distributor hits the firewall... I would now like to change to a magneto system as this will solve all of my problems and the look so much better!
Is anyone on here knowledgeable about these? This motor is mainly for the street however infrequent action on the strip happens... What are pros and cons? Will they work on a car that is not blown as that is all you seen to see them on? Any info is going to be great!

I think I'd go with a small cap HEI distributor.... The new mags with the ignition box are very expensive and probably a bit of overkill for a street engine.... The old style mags without a box run a set of points in them and suffer from low voltage at cranking speeds making start up sometimes a challenge.....Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery, Live for Today!

Go with the aftermarket HEI such as the 'Summit SUM-8550055' ($152.95)or 'Accel ACC-52100' ($232.95) both have adjustable vacuum advance,,, something you might really want to consider for the street. Mags by design are for all out racing app's and voltage increases with RPM's ( revs that your engine will never see) another con is no vacuum advance not to mention cost. As mentioned before,,, low voltage at cranking speed does not lend itself to easy starting at times,,, also there are points to 'dwell over',,,, best of luckwhen the flag drops,,, the bullshit stops,,,
