283 piston diamentions
HI,
I've been told that 283 pistons can be used in my (Aussie) chrysler 265 hemi 6, but that the block need to be decked extensively. I'll be fitting either a 4/71, or a big hairdryer, so lower compression would be a bonus. I realise that having a low deck height isn't ideal, with regards to squish and swirl. But I gotta lower the CR as cheaply as possible.
Anyway, what is the bore size of a 283, and what is the pin height?
Also are forgies readliy available for them?
Thanks,
Bart.some is good,
more is better
too much is JUST ENOUGH!

bore is 3.875 you can get forged if you look around for them. standard bores are hard to find though. like my 283 i run standard bore 302 pistons mine is bored .125 over and anything STD is hard to find. i have 13:1 compression though nice big domes. i am not sure of the pin height right off the top off my head though.

Block deck height = rod length + 1/2 stroke length + piston pin height + installed piston clearance (below deck)
SBC is 9.025 deck height (correct me on this)
Rod length is 5.7
Stroke is 3.0
Got a calculator?

265 = 3.910" bore size standard.
USE Chrysler 318ci pistons also 3.910" standard bore size.
Machine conrods off centre to low piston height and that will get you mid/low 8:1's comp.
You can also machine some off the top of the pistons too.(flat tops )
Chev scat conrods are 5.7" lenght like a 265, ive used them, they work better due to weight reduction, standard rods are good provided they are prepped correctly ie: shot peened , resized, new bolts etc..
Standard head flows approx. 280hp to 300hp, not much room to machine, runners are very thin but who cares if going turb.
Alloy heads available here in Australia, i can send you the link if you require.
400hp + flow
A 265 with an "E49 Bathurst camshaft" will produce just over 300HP .This was a factory item avail. in the Aussie Chargers. How much power do you want to make ??
I've made 323HP with hydraulic cam, dual valve springs and headwork. Not balanced.... thats budget + reliabilty for miles on end
SRP make 265ci forgies
flatlanderracing.com will make any sort of 318 piston to suit your application.
Big mods required to go 400HP + $$$$ let me know and i can give you an idea.... reliabilty lost, constant pull downs... these blocks stretch and walk.
# 6 cyl. normally goes oval when you mount it on an engine stand... true try it and measure... i use custom made girdles for bottom end + rework
oiling system+ more.
